SPRINGFIELD ARMORY
In 1777, George Washington ordered the creation of Springfield Armory to store ammunition and gun carriages for the American Revolutionary War.
In 1794 Springfield Armory began manufacturing muskets to defend our young, free Republic. The Armory functioned as a firearms supplier for every major American conflict for the next 150 years.
In 1968, citing budgetary concerns, the U.S. Government closed Springfield Armory. Now the walls of Springfield Armory would house historians, paying homage to the past rather than those with an eye to the future.
In 1974, the Reese family rescued not only the name “Springfield Armory®” but the philosophy that drove it for centuries.
With reverence for the legacy of The Armory, the Reese family resurrected the most historically significant designs produced by The Armory – M1 Garand, 1911-A1, and the M14.
In 2001, as Springfield Armory entered a new millennium, introducing the XD® pistol changed the world of handguns forever. The XD followed in the footsteps of so many legendary Armory designs before it, quickly gaining a reputation as a quality, reliable firearm that is easy to use.
In 2007, Springfield Armory raised shooters’ expectations of what a polymer pistol should be by introducing the XD-M® series of pistols. The XD-M carried on the Springfield Armory tradition of raising the bar.
In 2017, shortly following the launch of the SAINT in 2016, Springfield Armory wasted no time releasing a premium line called the SAINT Edge. The Edge features a billet receiver paired with premier components for quick handling and improved accuracy, and it is comparable to custom builds that cost much more.
In 2019, featuring a patented magazine with a best-in-class capacity of 11+1 and 13+1 with an included extended magazine, the Hellcat is explicitly designed for everyday carry with Adaptive Grip Texture™ and high visibility sights. It is also available in an optics-ready OSP configuration.
In 2022, Springfield Armory released the Hellion. Featuring a “bullpup” configuration where the action is located behind the trigger, the Hellion features an overall length of just 28.25 inches with a 16” barrel.
In 2023 the Echelon sets a new standard for modern, striker-fired duty pistols. This modular and highly adaptable handgun is designed around a robust stainless-steel chassis and revolutionary optics mounting system, engineered with superior ergonomics and built to withstand the harshest conditions.
THE 2020 BOUNDARY RIFLE LINE
The Boundary differs from the Waypoint rifle in that it’s fitted with more premium modern features, a traditional style sporter stock, and uses a hinged floorplate instead of a removable magazine.
THE FURNITURE – INTERNALS
The Boundary features an AG Composites 100% carbon fiber stock hand-painted in a Rogue camouflage pattern. It has a 13.5-inch length of pull, two QD cups, and a 1-inch Pachmayr Decelerator buttpad. The Boundary has an aluminum-hinged floor plate attached to a one-piece bottom metal that hides an internal magazine.
The Boundary features the TriggerTech Field model with frictionless technology that’s adjustable from 2.5 to 5 pounds and a low profile with no-snag safety.
THE RECEIVER – BOLT – BARREL
The Model 2020 Action is manufactured from stainless steel with a grey Cerakote finish. Features include dual-locking lugs on a fluted bolt that travels down EDM raceways for precision engagement and an optimized extraction cam that provides reliable operation. There’s a low-profile bolt stop, and the action also features a detachable Remington 700 pattern Picatinny rail.
The bolt is fluted 4140 tool steel that is machined after heat treating with a Nitride finish, and a 90-degree bolt handle with a removable knob.
Boundary Barrels are available in old-school fluted stainless steel or a carbon fiber jacketed barrel. This pre-tensioned barrel design means that about 95% of the carbon fiber sleeve does not touch the barrel, ensuring cooling from the gaps between the barrel and the sleeve.
The threaded barrel, which includes a thread protector, has a removable SA Radial Brake, which reduces recoil by directing gasses outwardly.

THE VERDICT
The Boundary is a small improvement on the Waypoint, which is a great rifle. It’s full of premium components, and anyone building this rifle from scratch would be into serious money just buying the stock and carbon fiber barrel. If you’re looking for a premium bolt action rifle with an old-school look, check out the Boundary at your Springfield Dealer.
