The Republican Party made a dramatic turn on gun rights.
Gun grabbers are celebrating this historic change that the GOP has made.
They have caved to the pressure and withdrawn their support for gun rights.
For decades, the Republican Party has been the only major party in the United States that supports Second Amendment rights for all people.
There are other smaller parties that also support these rights, such as the Libertarian Party, but America is effectively a two-party system and the Democrats have made clear that they are opposed to gun rights in nearly all cases.
This means that gun owners who want to see their rights protected have nowhere to turn but the Republican Party. Apparently, however, that may not be the case anymore.
While there are individual Republican leaders in elected office who still support gun rights, the party as a whole has stripped it from their platform, apart from one tiny and generic statement.
They did this in response to immense pressure from the national media and the gun control lobby, as well as some very powerful people within the party who wanted it changed.
According to The Reload, “The Republican National Committee (RNC) Platform Committee voted 84-to-18 on Monday to adopt the new 2024 platform language after skipping the process entirely in 2020. The finalized document leans into former President Donald Trump’s ‘America First’ outlook and parrots many of his stances on issues ranging from immigration to trade. However, it also minimized the party’s emphasis on gun policy compared to its previous platform.
“The entire platform discusses gun rights just once, in a preamble statement about the party’s dedication to defending ‘our fundamental freedoms, including freedom of speech, freedom of religion, and the right to keep and bear arms.’ The final product omits any discussion of tangible gun policy ideas.”
The one section that mentions the Second Amendment is largely irrelevant, as Democrats have proven that there are tons of novel ways to interpret the Second Amendment to allow for gun control.
The article continues, “The GOP’s old platform stood in stark contrast to the 2020 Democratic party platform, which dedicated several paragraphs to endorsing gun-control proposals aimed at ‘Ending the Epidemic of Gun Violence.’”
“The Trump campaign celebrated the final draft of the platform and emphasized the former President’s personal influence on its contents.”
This new platform isn’t anything to celebrate. It is a rejection of one of the most important policy positions of the Republican Party, which is a bold defense of the right to bear arms.
It has watered down its defense of that key American principle so badly that it can now be read in the same way Democrats do, as a useless amendment that doesn’t apply to individuals.
This is a dangerous moment for the gun rights movement, and it is now more important than ever to mobilize gun rights supporters nationwide to protect their rights.
It’s clear from this platform that the Republican Party has no intention of defending those rights on their own.
